number是可數(shù)名詞，復(fù)數(shù)形式是“numbers”。意思是：n. 數(shù)；（雜志等的）期；號(hào)碼；數(shù)字；vi. 計(jì)入；總數(shù)達(dá)到；vt. 編號(hào)；計(jì)入；數(shù)…的數(shù)目；使為數(shù)有限。

number可數(shù)嗎

1. 表示“號(hào)碼”，可縮略為 No.（有時(shí)可省略不用），這類結(jié)構(gòu)通常不用冠詞：

Room (number) 105 第105號(hào)房

Bus (No.) 16 16路公共汽車

question number 4 第4個(gè)問題

live at (No.) 35 York Rd, London 住在倫敦約克路35號(hào)

注意，這類結(jié)構(gòu)有時(shí)可放在名詞前作定語，如：

No. 17 Platform 第17號(hào)站臺(tái)

No. 1 Middle School 第一中學(xué)

有時(shí)可用兩類表達(dá)。如：

Platform No. 16 / No. 16 Platform 16號(hào)站臺(tái)

有時(shí)可以用冠詞，主要見于用于名詞前作定語的情形，且此時(shí)的number通常采用完整形式。如：

a number 9 shoe 9號(hào)鞋

a number 25 bus 25路公共汽車

the Number 10 trolley bus 10路電車

2. 表示“數(shù)目”或“數(shù)量”，要注意區(qū)別a number of與the number of：前者意為“許多”“若干”等，number 前可用 good, great, large, small 等詞修飾，其后必須接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)形式，用作主語時(shí)，謂語動(dòng)詞也用復(fù)數(shù)；后者意為“……的數(shù)量”，其后也接可數(shù)名詞的復(fù)數(shù)形式或具有復(fù)數(shù)意義的名詞，用作主語時(shí)，謂語要用單數(shù)。如：

A large number of problems still have to be solved. 依然有大量問題有待解決。

The number of jobs is increasing. 工作的數(shù)目正在增加。

The number of people invited was fifty, but a number of them were absent for different reasons. 共邀請(qǐng)了50人，但有些人由于種種原因缺席未到。

3. 用于語in number和in numbers，兩者均可表示“在數(shù)量上”。如：

Wild dogs are now few in number. 野狗的數(shù)量現(xiàn)在很少。

The decline in numbers of young people means that fewer teachers will be needed. 年輕人數(shù)量的下降意味著對(duì)教師需求也會(huì)減少。

比較而言，in number只是純粹地指數(shù)量，而in numbers則通常暗示數(shù)量多，所以它還可以表示“大量地”“具有數(shù)量優(yōu)勢(shì)的”。如：

Visitors came in (great) numbers. 參觀者蜂擁而來。

Strength lies in numbers. 人多力量大。
